This week we are looking at online marketing and search engine optimization from behind bars; more specifically, we are making O.J. Simpson the character of the week.

Of course, O.J. would be a black hat, using all sorts of nefarious and shady tactics to get his websites to page one, and he would not hesitate to enlist fellow black hats in his quest to freely dominate the rankings. However, his behavior would eventually come back to haunt him - in regard to online marketing, he would get banned from the search engines and have negative blog posts written about him; in the real world, his crimes have already caught up with him.

And that’s the point - we all know that nothing ever really disappears on the web, so using spammy or black hat tactics to rank will eventually backfire, even if you get away with it at first.
