Secrets of SEO Copywriting Part 4: Think Like A Journalist

When people are reading web content, they tend to scan it quickly as opposed to reading every last word, so a short, snappy writing style can be an SEO writer or blogger’s best friend. On the other hand, long pages of text are preferably for search engine optimization purposes - more content for the search engine spiders to crawl and more doorways for visitors. Fortunately, the way to reconcile these disparate concepts is simple. Think like a journalist and write your blog posts and articles in the inverted pyramid style.

Picture an upside down pyramid. The biggest, most important element - the base the supports everything else - is at the top. Then the rest of the shape gets thinner towards the bottom, tapering into nothing at the end. Your articles should be constructed the same way, with your main point made in the first sentence or two. Tell your readers exactly what they are going to get when they read your article - that broad pyramid base should be the most significant or most newsworthy content, with lesser points following it in order of importance.

According to the inverted pyramid system, the title is the part of your post carries the most weight. Since it is the first thing readers see, it is what they use to determine whether or not they are going to continue reading. Naturally, the same goes for web content - the title and probably a short summary are all potential visitors are going to read when they are scanning the SERPs and deciding whether or not to click on your link, so therefore that is the part of the article that you should consider most carefully.
