Debunking Search Engine Optimization: Seven SEO Myths That Need To Die

If a search engine optimization or search engine marketing company tells you any of these things, it is time to show them the door - and find an SEO company that isn’t trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

1. They will manually submit your website to hundreds of search engines.
Manually submitting websites to be crawled by search engine spiders was necessary several years ago, but now all the major search engines have the ability to discover and crawl new websites automatically.
2. They will submit your site to hundreds of directories.
While there are indeed hundreds (if not more) of directories on the web, getting hundreds of directory links is probably not going to have a significant impact on your rankings. Getting listed in a few of the most respected directories (such as the Yahoo business directory and DMOZ.org) as well as few relevant niche directories are all that matters.
3. They have special relationships with Google, Yahoo, MSN, or other search engines.
No SEO company has a special relationship with Google or other major search engine that can help your website rise in the SERPs.
4. PPC advertising is just as good as ranking highly in the organic results.
While Pay Per Click campaigns certainly do have their place, studies have repeatedly shown that being on page one organically leads to the greatest number of clicks and corresponding conversions.
5. SEO is collection of techniques meant to fool search engines.
Any time a company brings up something like tricking or fooling search engines (or human visitors, for that matter), that should be a red flag that they are likely using black hat or unethical tactics that will likely backfire on you eventually - and may even get your website banned or penalized.
6. SEO is a single, one-time-only process.
Search engine optimization and search engine marketing are ongoing processes that require constant attention and tweaking. This is because the search engines change their algorithms frequently and websites with fresh content tend to rank the most highly, because the engines consider the freshest results the most relevant.
7. You will experience overnight success!
Beware of companies promising to get you on page one for your key terms or hundreds of conversions overnight, because search engine optimization and marketing is a long term process and it can take several months (or more for really popular keywords) to rank for competitive terms.

Overall, remember that If an SEO consultant’s offering sounds just a little too good to be true, it probably is. Therefore, you have to do your homework and understand a proper SEO/SEM campaigns requires a little patience and effort, but that patience is definitely a virtue and great things come to those who wait.
