Build Your Link Profile and Command Respect With Your Writing: Ten Types of Authority Content
As we said yesterday, today’s post is all about creating authority content because after all, authority content is a key aspect of a solid search engine optimization strategy, because it is beloved by search engines and humans alike. However, creating solid, authoritative content is not that easy. Accordingly, here are ten types of articles or blog posts that help boost your authority - and your reliability, credibility, and therefore your site’s link profile.
1. Resource Collections - The concept of a resource collection post might seem simple, but these posts tend to take a significant amount of time to put together. However, the effort is worth it because extensive resource collections tend to do quite well on social bookmarking websites, because people want to save for them for future reference. Try gathering a list of good books related to your industry, free online tools, or useful websites for those in your niche.
2. Dictionaries/Glossaries - If your field typically involves lots of jargon and other technical speak that outsiders (or your clients) may not understand, demystifying the language by creating a dictionary of common terms not only builds your credibility, it helps customers and newcomers to your industry understand what you do.
3. Expert Interviews - Every niche has its experts, and much of the time they are amenable to being interviewed and featured on a suitable blog, especially once you’ve already built up some authority (an added bonus: if they have a website or blog themselves, they will probably link to your interview).
4. Point/Counterpoints - Illustrate the commonly held opinions/beliefs in your field and come up with counterpoints to them; be sure to examine and explain both sides of the issue thoroughly. You could also do a “good cop/bad cop” type of post, depending on your market (for instance, in SEO it could be white hat vs. black hat).
5. In-Depth Explanations - Delve deep into one particular topic and analyze it, offering detailed information and background in your article. After all, if you are going to build an authority website on any given subject, you need extensive knowledge of that particular subject, so show it off.
6. Historical Facts - While this type of article may not be possible for bleeding edge fields, most fields have a good amount of history. You can take of advantage of that history to establish your authority by creating a time line or using it to explain the current state of the industry.
7. Charts & Graphs - For the Excel and graphics ninjas among us, creating awe-inspiring and helpful charts and graphs can be a solid way to generate some serious credibility along with simply making your website more visually pleasing.
8. Tutorials - Every day more people are turning to the web to learn how to do everything from web design to cooking to learning languages (both spoken and programming). Give them what they are looking for and showcase your own capabilities at the same time by crafting interesting how-to or tutorial articles, or even videos for visual learners.
9. Opinions/Editorials - Are you passionate about a particular product, publication, or technique that is relevant to your niche? Share the love and write an opinion piece about why it is so awesome.
10. Lists of Tips & Techniques - Everybody loves a list post (seriously, although lists get mentioned a lot in blogging/content creation advice pieces, lists are popular for a reason - they make it possible to scan and understand lots of information quickly), and sharing your favorite tips or techniques related to your site’s topic is an easy way to establish credibility.
