Another Common SEO Question: Does More Traffic Always = More Conversions?

Last week our SEO company started to explain some of the more basic aspects of search engine optimization and internet marketing, because like many others in our field, we often find ourselves working with clients are not particularly familiar with the SEO industry. Therefore, in the interest of improving the relationships between internet marketing companies and their clients, we are sharing our answers to these common questions on our search engine optimization blog.

One of the questions that we get asked all the time is “What effect will being on page one have for my business? Does more traffic equal more conversions?”

Our response to that question is always different, depending on the person doing the asking. For the vast majority of business and ecommerce websites, being on page one for relevant keywords does lead to a significant increase in conversions - especially for popular search terms and products. After all, most people rarely go beyond the first page or even the first three organic search listings, so being ranked highly does indeed drive lots of traffic to the sites at the top of the SERPs.

However, (and this is a major however), if a website is not easy for visitors to understand - it if it not usable - being ranked highly won’t necessarily lead to more conversions. This is because it doesn’t matter how much the search engines like your website if links are broken, navigation is difficult, or if key programs or applications do not work. It is absolutely essential that your website be optimized for users as well as search engine spiders in order to see any growth in your business online.
